I Love a Man in Gingham

The other day during my ride home on the subway, I took immediate notice of a strapping, handsome business man. While this generally happens often in any major thriving metropolis, certain special details make a man stand out even more...and in a good way. The guy in question was dressed to the nines. Dark business suit in a dashing charcoal grey shade, pressed and fitted to perfection. His grooming was right on par too. His shirt stood right out with something I had never seen before paired with a suit. Under that suit was the most sexy red gingham dress shirt I believe I've ever seen. Perhaps the shirt wouldn't make quite an impact all on it's lonesome, but when paired with the rest of the package, it completely made the look. Efforts to avert my eyes were useless; I stared like an animal caught in headlights.

Since then I have taken more time to pay attention to what men around me are wearing. I always feel like winking with a little smile at the ones who put an effort in. An effort doesn't have to mean going overboard to be labelled as "metro", but just enough to show that they care about their appearance.

Also I find myself on the hunt for more men's dress gingham shirts. Who knew they could be such a turn on? It's like bow-ties on a dress shirt for me now...I just go crazy!

I don't think there is a better way to describe the fashion designs and style of Austria's own Lena Hoschek. The prints and patterns she uses have a distinct innocent 1950s feel to them. That is until you realize that they are presented with a bit of an edge. Rockabilly gals clad with tattoos sport the looks, dolled up to the nines.

Even if it is just for a stroll out on the beach. I'm quite certain my jaw hit the floor when I saw the pink Elvis retro 2 pieces (as shown above).

Just when you thought it was all sunshine, lollipops and rainbows, the catalogue throws a few bondage/risque images your way. With the sweet, you get the salty.

Unfortunately, I have yet to find a way to purchase any of the items online. The website has a list of cities where clothing and accessories are available, however. Fingers crossed this line soon makes it to the online market so they will then be more within reach.

How I remember that day; I was about 14 and been having increasing difficulty being able to see the chalkboard in class. I'd squint away and covet the seats at the front of the class, and not because I was a brown noser or anything, it's just that my vision was a blur. I put it off for a little while because I knew what that meant; time for glasses. At the time it was not a hip, hot, or "in" thing to wear specs. In fact, terms such as "four eyes" was still going around.

After my mom noticed my difficulty while I was watching TV one night, I finally gave in and we booked a trip to see the optometrist. They confirmed it and I got my first pair of glasses. Surprisingly, I enjoyed them more than I ever led on; I secretly dug the style and change in my look. I was no fashionista or style savvy chick back then like I am now; however, it opened some doors for me in terms of interest in style (surprisingly). There were basic, wire framed, nothing special glasses.

Years later, I've become a full-time glasses gal. Can't see properly without em. Truth is that I love them now and wouldn't even dream for a second of getting laser vision correction. Actually, the whole idea of it kinda scares the bejeezus out of me!

Since then, I've embraced the idea of wearing "cheaters" more and more. My collection keeps growing. So far I have 4 pairs. My latest want is to buy some authentic vintage frames (I'm thinking 1950s or early 1960s) and get them filled with my prescription. The hunt to find the perfect pair is going to be fun. Until then, I shall be consumed with cheaters inspiration.

Marilyn in her famous role in How to Marry a Millionaire as the gal who thought men weren't attracted to dames who wore glasses. Lucky for her she was adorable both with them on, and additionally with them off (bumping into walls, reading books upside down). On always wins in the end though!

The Viva Las Vegas Rocakabilly Weekender 14 is officially in full swing!

Every year (for the past 14 years), Las Vegas has held a rip roarin' rockin' time at the Orleans Hotel (just slightly away from the strip) to celebrate all things rockabilly. While there, you will find a TON of live performances; a vintage/retro car show; more clothing/accessories vendors of retro-inspired and rockabilly clothing than you've ever seen in one place, at one time; and people dressed up EVERYWHERE!

Now you'd think, if I know all this stuff about it that I have been before, right? Well, guess again; I sadly have yet to go. Since I will be missing this year (again), I will have to live vicariously through my friends who will be going. So to all y'all out there with tickets, a room at the Orleans and cash to spend at all the venders, please have the very best time! Cannot wait to see all the spoils you come home with; and be sure to take lots of pictures and videos.

Today marks the opening of the long awaited film adaptation of the novel, Water for Elephants; starring Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson, and Christoph Waltz. While I have some trepidation as to just how good it's going to be, I will say that I am terribly excited to see every single costume and accessory that will be worn my Reese.

By now, you've already seen her grace the cover of this month's Vogue. It provides a bit of a hint of what's to come in the film. So whether the movie stays true to the book or not, you can be certain that I will be waiting with baited breath during the coming attractions to see the (what I'm sure will be) spectacular 1930s carnival fashions shown in the film.

Classic Cinema {My Favourites} I

Recently, I had a request from a dear friend who wanted to know my top picks for classic films. You know, those must-watch ones. Now, most of you won't be at all surprised that my choices can somewhat be influenced by fashion and style. While there is no doubt that I am drawn to talents in acting, dialogue, and story; my eye tends to be the very first thing that needs to be satisfied. I'm a very visual person, and to me, cinematography, costuming, colour and quality of the visual, is what it is all about. Not too many people love 2006's Marie Antoinette for the storyline and dialogue; what immediately draws them in are all the delicious visuals. Each like a piece of heavenly candy there for your every enjoyment.

This list will feature a little of everything; black and white, technicolour, big time Hollywood stars, silent cinema, musicals, the avant-gard, etc. Also, I wish to feature this in no particular order; so please, get out a fresh piece of paper and copy them all down, making sure to put stars besides the ones that grab your attention the very most. Let's begin with the 1900s to the end of the 1930s...

With the royal wedding in less than 9 days now (can you believe how fast it approaches?!), I thought it would be highly appropriate to dedicate a post to the lady's hat. It is no secret that women in the UK have a major thing for head wear; whether it be a hat, or hair fascinator. No matter where in the world you are, from wherever you will be watching the royal wedding, I think it's only appropriate to watch it wearing a hat. The question then remains, what is the style for you? And no, a ball cap just won't make the cut for an occasion such as this one ;)

An honest mistake? A Prada dress so hot that it needs to be highlighted on as many covers as possible? *Shrug* Either way, I've picked a favourite. For me, its Zooey Deschanel's cover that does the dress more justice.

One of my guiltiest pleasures is taking in a good Elvis movie. They always seem to lift my spirits when I'm down, and can usually give me a laugh or two in between my squeals, giggles and swoons at watching The King do his thing.

With all these movies, the man has kissed SO MANY women. Just to be back in the 50s or 60s and be one of these women; what I wouldn't do. I'd settle these days for being an Elvis impersonator's chick ;) Maybe someone like the sexy Matt Lewis from Vegas' Legends show! Teehee ;)

Oh Veda!

With the recent revival through HBO's (I'm told, brilliant) remake of cinema classic, Mildred Pierce, I knew it was time to visit and pay homage to one of the most evil female characters in film. That of course would be Veda. Just thinking about her name puts a scowl on my face and makes me shake my fist! It's a little difficult to describe Veda in a few sentences; she just so happens to be a character that is best understood after watching the movie. Afterwards, you just get it, you can't help but hate her. However, sometimes its a love/hate thing. Why? Because the girl has got style! And in everything, clothing, makeup, and especially her hair.

Veda - Vintage Hair Styling by Lauren Rennells

One up-do caught the eye of the oh so talented author/hair designer extraordinare, Ms. Lauren Rennells author of Vintage Hair Styling (check out my post about it). It's even named after her, it's simply called "Veda". The book provides step by step instructions, along with a ton of easy to follow images. A few nights back, I gave it a try.

The book suggests to start by curling your hair with hot rollers. Instead, I went another way and used perm rods. Being my very first time using them for a damp/wet set, I was a little unsure as to how to compare them to sponge rollers.

I used only the orange rollers, which was the largest size I could find at the time when I picked them up (like the picture shown above). You can buy perm rods for dirt cheap at any beauty supply place. In Toronto I went to The Beauty Supply Outlet. I paid only $1.89 for a pack of 12.

I prepped my hair the same way as I mentioned in my foam rollers post done last week; with a small spray bottle (water and curling solution) to a suitable dampness. While my sponge rollers take approximately 3 to 5 hours to dry completely, the perm rods were dry in an hour and 40 minutes! I would have left them a bit longer, but the only issue I had is that they were starting to irritate my head by giving me a bit of a headache. Hah, maybe that's when you know they are all dry ;)

Took them out and the curls were PERFECT!! Maybe even better than sponge roller curls for me. My hair is pretty long now so that is saying quite a lot.

- Brush the hair out in a downward motion. This style does not require curl and the curling only aids in acquiring the form of the style.
- Make sure the back of the head is flat (like picture above). You can use bobby pins to temporarily keep it flat.
- Divide hair in 3 sections. 1 on each side, and 1 at the bottom.
- Next form a large victory roll on each side. Roll them up and towards the scalp. Pin and secure it to the head. A bit of backcombing and teasing can help form the shape. Another helpful tool if you need extra volume, or have difficult forming the roll is to use a hair rat.
-At the very end form one more roll at the bottom, again rolling upwards and securing the roll with bobby pins.
-Feel things out and use a mirror to make sure all the back sort of blends in together.

Here is my first time try. A good friend told me that she really liked it because it has a bit of modern twist to it.

Clearly I need a ton of pomade and serum to fix up those flyaways. But overall, I was pretty pleased with the look. The more I practice, the easier it will be for me to use in a pinch when my hair hasn't been washed in a few days and I want to do something with it. Don't forget to give it good hold with strong hairspray when you are all finished.

You can just do the back of the hair alone, or you can keep some extra front pieces of your hair handy for creating small victory rolls (like the Lauren Rennells image), or another variation that works with your hair.

Vedas hair looks a little more separated into 2 than what I did. There is volume and curl at the front.

Another great tip is to use a hair flower for extra va-voom!

Heaven...I'm in Heaven

It never fails that I get songs of romance and love in my head when I look at multi-million dollar (euro, pound) real estate. Sothebys, in particular, is a weakness for me. I could spend hours traveling the globe via their listings. Naturally, however, one city ALWAYS manages to capture my attention. I like to call it my true home, as I've never been anywhere else that makes me feel so at ease; a warm and inviting hug welcoming you back each time. Of course I am talking about Paris. We have many loves in our lives, Paris is one of those loves for me.

I can't help but feel my heart swell when I find charming beautiful listings in Paris. Whether they be in the range of "not in this lifetime", unless the Gods of lottery smile upon me in a BIG way, to small little (more affordable) places.

Today I decided to dream in the most massive scale. You know, the places that don't even list a price; the ones that keep you guessing with each incredible, awe-inspiring and breath-taking image. While love generally finds me with ease, today I found a gem so special, I can't help but share it here. And to all you millionaires out there to happen upon my blog and are looking to change surroundings, take this listing to heart because it could be the one for you...that is if I don't win the lottery and beat you to it. So friends, please dream with me. Imagine how spectacular life could be in a place like this and all the wonderful ways you could add to the sparkle. In ways, it reminds me of a mini Versailles, or even an in-city Petit Trianon.

The only words I have to accurately describe my emotions are, as ever, "le sigh". Mid-week day dreams are the very best.

Foam Roller Magic

For years I had been a slave to my curling iron figuring it was the quickest and easiest method to curling my hair. And you know what? It does work in a pinch. The trouble is is that lately it's just not working as fabulously as I'd like it to. My hair is at the point now where it's starting to become more and more healthy with each wash and colour (I'm a 3 year recovering blonde..that being for almost 9 years of my life I was blonde and it severely damaged my hair), and the fact it is getting very long makes it difficult to hold a heated curling iron curl for long.

As a result, I've been on a quest to find a more workable and lasting method of curling my hair. My discovery? Sponge rollers! You know them, the cheap little foam/sponge rollers your grandmother used to wear; the ones you can pick up at any drug store for a song and dance, those are the babies I'm talking about.

Wet sets tend to last quite long when done correctly. I've experimented with a few styles. From rod sponge rollers (see image below), to a sopping wet pin-curl setting, and now (the method I swear most by now), a sponge roller set. The only minor inconvenience (I find) to using this variety of wet set is the time involved in the interim; and that of course can vary with the degree of damp/wetness you make your hair prior to setting it in the roller.

First let's begin with what you'll need:

And that is really it as far as tools are concerned. The most important thing you will need is time, and it all varies on how curly you want your curls to how wet you get your hair. Finding the perfect dampness for your hair may take a few tries. Generally I like to do a few spritzes with my bottle and just feel it out before I curl.

Start by sectioning your hair out like you would if you were using a curling iron. Feel free to use claw clips or whatever you have handy to keep pieces separate. Then you must decide how much hair you want to curl, obviously the more hair you do, the bigger curl you'll get. Next, spray away and begin to roll.

You can roll in different directions and with different sized rollers. There are a ton of tutorials out there that can give you specific maps (if you will) that will show you what ways to roll for specific styles. When you are done, you should look like this (excuse the bath robe and iPhone photo haha)

Totally sexy, right? Every single time I roll with my sponge rollers, I instantly feel like a Golden Girl ready to meet my best gals and sit around the kitchen table for a few slices of cheesecake and gossip about sex. You know that idea isn't half bad! By the time you would be done hashing out your man problems over sweets, your hair would probably be dry enough to move to the next step.

Generally I let mine sit between 3 to 5 hours. When I'm feeling extra ambitious and exhausted enough, I'll wrap my head with a satin scarf (to stop frizzy curls from forming) and go to sleep for the night. Let me warn you that it really isn't the most comfortable sleep experience. Wearing them for the night can be a little awkward. However, if you can do it and are an easy sleeper, it can be worth it the effort; especially if your days are too full to walk around with curlers in them for a long period of time.

So you take them out each carefully, one by one and you've got your curls. Next you've gotta determine how curly you want. Going for a ringlet style? You may just want to take some styling cream and run your hands through the curls to smooth them out. Going for a more structured style? Get out that hair brush and train your hair in the style you want it. That is one part that is difficult to describe, it's one of those things you've got to feel out and do by trial and error as you above anyone else will know the way your hair behaves.

Last Saturday I did a quick style that had a decidedly 1940s feel to it.

Pinned back the sides and formed a few victory rolls at the top. As a finishing touch, the cherry on top, I chose a big and bold white orchid from Belle Blossoms.

The curls last all night, and well into the next few days. As the curl limps a bit, it makes it easier to form and manipulate new hair styles. A set can last me 3 days and countless styles. The best part is that I'm not further damaging my hair with the use of heated tools. A wet set such as this is a healthy alternative. What can I say? I swear by it. It's my ol' reliable source for curl styling.

For my first attempt at explaining hair styling, I hope I did well. I do realize that videos and more pictures would probably get the tips across better so that is something I will be looking into for next time. April will mark the restarting of my Charleston dance lessons. Back in February I began swing dance classes. The styles of dance change every other month; one month is dedicated to Charleston (1920s), the next month is all about Lindy Hop/Swing (1930s/40s). As I'm a gal who was clearly born in the wrong era (and I'm not too sure which era or decade I truly belong to as my style is changing all the time), this was my most obvious choice for a new fun hobby.

You build and before you know it, you're doing all these cheeky tricks with a partner (did you know Charleston can be danced with a partner?) and people are super impressed.

Fashion is a major game player here. The clothes were like nothing else that had ever been seen. Tradition was tossed out the window and everything was turned on its head. Short hair, boxy dresses, high hem lines, wild makeup and a general lust for life through clothing was so apparent. I must keep this in mind for costuming and dressing appropriately for lessons. To be honest, not many people "dress up" authentic to the era, but I always strive to get a few accessories on point. Let's dive into some inspiration pics for ideas which are manageable for dance.

My New Beauty Faves

It's not all that often that I treat myself to anything from Sephora, but when I do, I make sure I choose the very best products for me. How? Research, asking for help and knowing what works well with my skin and hair is key. I've found 4 I'm sticking to and standing by. Here are my picks:

Makeup Forever HD Foundation - Hands down, the very best foundation that has ever graced my skin. Goes on liquid and finishes like powder. The formula is gentle and you require very little for flawless coverage. Best part? No breakouts as it's oil-free (and my oily prone skin can't handle any more oil). The price is a tad steep, but it's worth every penny if you ask me.

Korres Lip Butter in "Pomegranate" - With a formula of natural ingredients, I was instantly drawn to this lip butter. It's silicone and oil-free. The colour is just enough pigment for punch without being too much and lasts for hours. I'm a fan!

Bare Escentuals Mineral Blush in "Vintage Peach" - The lovely salesgirl at Sephora chose this shade instantly when I asked for suggestions of what would work well on my cheeks for a wedding I was in last summer. The colour glistens and gives my pale skin the bit of lift and definition it needs. I love the slight shimmer in it and how long it tends to last.

Daisy Eau So Fresh by Marc Jacobs - Rollerball perfumes have become all the rage as of late. How can you resist trying a new scent when the price is so reasonable? I know I couldn't. After virtually years of shying away from the fragrance aisle (due to how scent sensitive I can be), I jumped in with both feet and fell in love with Daisy. It was the first one I smelled that day and just kept going back for more. $30 later, she was mine.

In addition, I've completely embraced the quest for healthy hair obsession. I partly blame a certain guest poster for this (*cough* Camillia's "Diary of a Hair Care Obsessed Gal" *cough*). No longer will I settle for drugstore brand shampoo and conditioners, I've gone to the salon brand side. My wallet sure felt the switch, but you know what I noticed even more? A MASSIVE improvement on the quality of my hair. Literally in 1 wash, after using Abba Pure Color Protect shampoo and conditioner (that conditioner is truly like butta), my hair was just as silky, smooth and heavenly as when I leave the salon. Actually, I think that is what my stylist and colourist use after they wash my up at the end of my visit. My little habit of hair twirling and feeling strands between my finger-tips has returned with a vengeance! I'll find myself doing it everywhere because my hair is so soft.

This slight switch-up to my beauty routine was very much needed, but I think I'm just getting started. Stay tuned for more favourites, I've just gotta get out to the stores and start doing some more research first ;)

Don't you just love when you just find a space that is SO YOU?! I have found such a space. Last night I finally had time to sift through the best issue of House Beautiful of the year, which just happens to be their colour issue. For years I've been drawn to it and count down the months until February is upon us and that decadent March issue can be in my hands.

Last year it was blue, and I was obsessed. Blue is truly one of my favourite colours and more often than not, any bedroom I've ever had has been painted blue at my request in various shades. On the other hand, I have also delved into a whole different colour palette to differ my dreams/mood and the atmosphere for other bedrooms I've had. The colour? Pink. Heaps and heaps of glorious and feminine pink. The trick is making it look sophisticated. So when I discovered 2011's colour issue would be dedicated to PINK, you can bet there was squeals of delight. I'm also pretty sure I let one out when I saw my issue arrive in the mail and gazed at that space by wildly talented "lifestyle architect" Windsor Smith (featured above). To me, everything about it is just perfection. My dream living space. The best part is that it captures all my favourite colours, even my keen taste for blues ;)

In fact, it reminded me of these: (images seen so often by myself it's become engraved in my memory and thoughts).

It's a though the film has come to life and been splashed everywhere in a space in a way that makes it modern, sophisticated and so very fun. There is nothing I don't love about it. This shall be an issue I cherish for years to come!

A few months ago, my eyes were opened to an entirely new experience. As I have been a fan of online shopping for as long as I've known of it, and also mad crazy passionate about buying vintage whenever I can, I was delighted to learn of a little marketplace/forum/catch-all for gals with an eye for unique style called Smashion.

Essentially Smashion feels like a giant friend's exchange sale. Bring in (or rather post) and sell all the stuff you want to be rid of (and think someone else can find use out of) and in return you can purchase some new/old stuff for yourself to spice up your own wardrobe. It's all too fun. And the best part is that gals (and guys alike) show off their finds; they put together fabulous outfits, take a photo and show it off in the gallery. Inspiration sizzles there.

A few weeks back, a representative from the site contacted me for a bit of an interview. Let me tell you that I was just thrilled! Someone out there, from such a site took an interest in this little hobby blog of mine, how could I resist?

All the questions were fashion and style related which always tend to make me just bloom and gush about the stuff I love. While I can yak on about how/what I said, maybe you'd be interested in checking it out?

The new ad directed by the outrageously talented Sofia Coppola has just been released...and with perfect timing in mind. Natalie shines with delicate beauty and is the perfect Dior girl. The mood and atmosphere of the video is so indicative of Sofia's directing style. It's all about having you just feel it. This ad oozes sensuality, and a cheeky, chic sense of fun. J'adore!

Various members of Etsy choose their favourite combination of items up for sale. The themes are varied and more often than not result in a creative collection of impressive finds. The greatest victory in Etsy (I think) is finding a shop that is just so you; a place where you can't help but fall in love with their approach to handmade quality goods. Today is a day I found such a shop.

Now I'm not sure whether she has a stylist or not, but in mostly everything I have seen her in for public appearances (and even pap pictures) has been flawless. The key to her success on the red carpet has consistently been her ability to pick classic styles with an edge.

Diary of a Hair Care Obsessed Gal {Guest Post}

The History
I'm obsessed...with my hair. About a year ago I decided I wanted long, luscious hair. Go figure, considering growing up my four cousins and I all had hair so long that we could sit on it. It became something we were all known for. Well wouldn't you know it that once we hit our teens we ALL chopped it off!? And not just to shoulder length, I'm talking (well, in my case) 'Posh Spice' circa 1997. Since then, I've worn my hair somewhere between chin and shoulder length. I thought this 'growing my hair long' process was going to be a breeze. So I just don't make an appointment to cut my hair. Easy right? Umm, maybe not.

Styles throughout the years

I've learned that when it comes to hair care, the number one concern is damage. You have to avoid, control and prevent damage to your hair; otherwise, it won't grow (and here I thought it was as simple as avoiding the scissors!). And who wants to have nice lovely hair if it's just going to look scraggly and course?

I have horribly damaged hair and have devised a little hair care regiment to prevent more damage. I still have about 4 inches of growth until I reach my 'goal' length.

Top Hair Tips

First, book a trim. This is the best way to ensure you have healthy hair. You cannot repair damaged hair, no matter what your bottle of conditioner tells you! Be sure to tell your stylist that you are growing out your hair. It's up to you how much you want taken off, but be sure to SHOW them how much to cut. I think stylists are taught a totally different measuring system in school than the rest of us.
Avoid tangles in your hair at all costs. We loose 100 hairs a day, and those hairs are what causes most tangles. When we have a tangle, we tend to pull and yank at the hair to loosen it. This ruins the cuticle and causes major damage to the hair. So remember, tangles are your enemy!
Professional shampoo and condition are essential. Do not buy drugstore shampoos. They are extremely drying and they strip your hair of their natural oils. Buying professional products is a bit of an investment, but worth it in the long run. I really like Aveda's Shampure shampoo and conditioner, as well as Joico's Daily balancing shampoo and condition (retail for $16-$18 a bottle).

If you like to curl or straighten your hair, be sure to purchase a heat protectant. I think this is where I went wrong. I discovered heat protectant sprays late in the game. CHI sells a fantastic infrared thermal protectant treatment for around $14.
Buy a natural bristle brush. Throw out that plastic drugstore brush with the missing balls at the end of the bristles. You're only doing more damage! A natural bristle brush is the best because it distributes the natural oils of the hair better than a plastic one, and will last longer.
Do not cut your own hair UNLESS you own an excellent pair of barber scissors. Do not even THINK about cutting your split ends with those orange handled kitchen scissors! Your hair needs to be cut with super sharp scissors, otherwise it'll just split up the shaft and you'll do more damage than good.

Essentially, be nice to your hair. Avoid unnecessary heat if possible as well.

How I take care of my hair

Like I said, I'm obsessed. I've spent many hours Googling, concocting, planning, researching and testing a ton of products and making my own hair care creations. I've even gone so far as to make my own deep conditioner and detangler.

I've learned the importance of natural oils so I only shampoo every 2 or 3 days. I can get away with 4 if I'm lucky. Before I get in the shower, I brush my hair really well. I want to get rid of all those loose hairs before I shampoo. Plus, it helps keep all that hair out of the drain ;) I use Aveda's Shampure shampoo on my roots only (remember, my hair is really damaged at the bottom and really dry). I don't scrub my hair either. Instead, I massage the roots and then gently rub the rest of my hair. I don't want to pile my hair on top of my head either. That is a good way to get a ton of tangles. After a really good rinse, I use Moroccan Oil's repairing conditioner. I am absolutely in love with it and it's fairly affordable at $20 a bottle.

If I'm feeling up to it (usually I'm not), I'll adjust the shower head and give my hair a final rinse in cold water. This closes the cuticle and makes the hair look super shiny.

Once I get out of the shower, I wrap my hair in a microfiber turban. I let my hair air dry 80% before I touch it. Once it's almost dry, I take Moroccan Oil and apply a quarter-sized amount to my hair, concentrating on the ends. Then I carefully brush my hair. If I'm in a bit of a rush, I sometimes blow-dry my hair on cold. I'm very careful not to use any unnecessary heat.

Ta-da! I'm done! I'm lucky(?) to have poker straight hair, so I don't usually have to worry about straightening my hair, or using a ton of products to make it curly.

On Day 2 or 3 is when I apply my homemade deep conditioner (I told you that I am obsessed!). I usually apply it at night while I watch TV, sleep on it and wash my hair in the morning. OR if I know I'm going to home all day, I'll apply the deep conditioner and wear my hair in a bun and wash that night. I only apply the conditioner to the ends. When washing it, I do have to give it a good scrub as the oils are a bit heavy. But once it's dry, my hair is back to it's lovely supple self.

The Recipe

It took me a few tries, but I finally figured out the perfect concoction for me.

1 tsp Olive Oil
1 oz Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
2 oz Jojoba Oil
5-10 drops essential oils (I like Aveda's Jasmine Absolute)

Heat in microwave for 25 seconds, or until warm; apply to hair. Twist into a bun, cover in Saran Wrap, sleep, vacuum, paint your nails, go for a run. Shampoo normally, but you will have to scrub a little more than usual.

I've noticed a massive change in my hair since I started using my deep conditioner 3 months ago. My hair isn't as dry as it was in the fall (or the 'crunchies' as I call it), and I've been able to ward off trims from every 3 months to every 5-6 months. Jojoba oil is the secret ingredient to my conditioner. Jojoba oil's cells are so so small they're able to penetrate the hair's cuticle, leaving your hair incredibly soft.

With any luck my regiment will leave me with hair as beautiful as some of my celebrity inspirations. My favourite brown is Anne Hathaway. I love her hair when she wears it a bit longer, although she can rock a bob like no other.

I also squeal like a 12 year old girl every week while watching 'The Vampire Diaries'. But not because of Stephan/Elena's love affair. It's because I'm in love with Nina Dobrev's waist length hair.

But my ultimate inspiration is Kate Middleton's hair. When Prince William and her announced their engagement, not only was I in love with her ring (and that dress!) but I was fixated on her hair. Healthy, shiny and long. The idea of a crown on top of those locks is enough to make me weak in the knees.

I wonder if Kate Middleton is as obsessed with her hair as I am with mine....;)

Hometown Love {Toronto in Rue Magazine}

Online magazines have taken off in a BIG way lately. These days you cannot pass a blog that doesn't gush about the good articles, finds, pictures (etc.) in the likes of Lonny Magazine and Rue Magazine (as shown above). The styling and layouts could make a girl daydream for days. I especially love how when a product or item is featured in Rue, you can hover your mouse right over the item and a link pops up for you get it! You can't do that in a hardcopy magazine.

Imagine my surprise when clicking through the pages of Rue, I find a feature on my beloved hometown Toronto! A shopping guide by Style at Home's senior design editor Margot Austin is featured that takes you through her favourite spots to find home decor. I am in love, and so much so that I can't help but show you the feature. Enjoy :)

My heart just about sank last week when I spotted these lovely plates while shopping at Anthropologie. It's not big secret that I am one of those kooky gals obsessed with anything and everything Marie Antoinette (mostly I can thank Sofia Coppola for this). So when browsing for new drinking glasses (see my fave picks below), and stumbled across a big stack of these, I knew that someday they would have to be mine.

Id easily be happy mixing in a few plates to continue the French theme it would inspire, like the adorable French Country plate shown above. While it may not exactly go with my Kitchy Kitchen Retro theme that I have currently going on, it will, without doubt, make eating even more pleasant. Sometimes a mismatch of things is good, right? ;)

My trip did result in purchases, as I decided to finally get 4 of these rose Fleur-de-Lis tumblers. I feel so ladylike sipping a simple glass of water in them.

South Pacific {The Shabby Apple}

The South Pacific Musical is returning to Toronto in just a few short days. I am beyond excited as there is really nothing quite like experiencing Rogers and Hammerstein live! You can bet I'm going to be going and singing along with all the words. In fact, I've been making a habit of belting "I'm Gonna Wash that Man Right Outta My Hair" in the shower.

So you can imagine how thrilled I was (being such a fan) to find that The Shabby Apple has released a collection of South Pacific inspired dresses.

I love how each dress has a name inspired by the musical. All of this is making me daydream of balmy, sunny, tropical climates. Are you escaping the cold chills of winter this year? I sure wish I was.

Dark 60s Eyes

Makeup has never really been my area of expertise unfortunately. Although through the years I'd like to think my skills have improved somewhat, and that I also am getting more of a hang of what colours/styles look right on me. It's all a bit of a game and experiment; testing various looks to find a good style match.

Now with that being said, I have been requested to do a feature on makeup..and to be honest, I am a little nervous because I believe it is my first. So well, I figured, might as well go big! 1960s smokey dark eye makeup is a pretty "jump in all the way" kind of thing. My reader's inspiration was the super talented singer, Adele.

Adele clearly knows how to play up her features with her variations on a modern-day 1960s smokey kitten look. Sometimes she plays it all dark (like the pic on the left), and she also finds ways to make the style appear a bit warmer (like in the pic on the right). The differences in lip colour acts to enhance both in different ways as well.

One thing is clear, however; you are going to need a good eye liner and basic shadows to begin with.

When it comes to application like this, I prefer a cream eyeliner, especially for a beginner-intermediate like me. I find it a little more forgiving than straight liquid liner, but at the same time more of a creative challenge than a straight pencil gives. A good brush is key as well, I prefer angled eyeliner ones like this Sigma brush. Oohh and my go-to quick smokey eye duo is this Stila kit.

60s makeup was all about mascara; the bigger, longer, bolder, the better. Bottom lashes are almost always a major focus of attention. Whether they are naked underneath crawling down the cheeks like spiders, or in combination with a bold dark eyeliner, they are not for a second forgotten.

Do you ever feel during one extreme half of weather that you entirely seem to forget what it's like to feel the opposite extreme? That is, today here in Toronto it is -18 degrees Celsius out, with a windchill that makes the air feel as crisp and frigid as -25. My mind keeps searching for what it is like to feel hot weather. This past summer Toronto had quite a hot streak, one truly uncomfortable week (as I have no air conditioning unit in my apartment) where temperatures reached 45 degrees Celsius (including the humidex). Having said all of that, keep in mind that we don't get the good heat or good cold weather. The air is wet and you feel every degree that is in the air. Summer's air is very humid, while the wet makes winter feel even more cold. Hence, the extremes I mentioned earlier.

Now while I forget what summer really feels like; trying to recall the feeling of merely slipping on a pair of sandals and walking outside with just regular clothes on, or really, just the ease of everything. Since I cannot really remember summer as clear as I'd like, I'm finding it difficult to think shoes that aren't warm boots. Ugh and warm boots, the whole practical nature of them makes me a little ill. I'll fess up, I'm not a boots girl *shock*...To me, footwear is a great pair of pumps. In other words, to me, winter is a dead footwear season. I take no joy in shoes in the winter.

What can brighten my mood? Thinking of great boots won't work; however, dreaming of warmer temperatures and the ability to wear non-winter shoes out will do. No worrying about salt ruining leather or snow soaking through to make your feet wet and cold. Today, my friends, is going to be a celebration of non-winter foot wear. Let us bask in the glory of bright colours, peep toes, sling backs, d'orsays, thongs, sky-high heels and sassy little details. Today is a day I will love footwear again!!

Retro Hair - The Essentials - Snood Mania

Originally the snood was a product of necessity to a generation of women taking on the roles of factory and machine workers. The long, flowing hair of women presented a danger as it could get caught in the machinery. While some cut their hair short, others preferred a different route. One that would become a fashion statement. Support the war-effort and keep that long hair by wearing a snood.

In recent years the snood has been making a major comeback! Remember my post about Lauren Rennell's Vintage Hairstyling Book? In it she shows 2 different ways of styling your hair with the use of a snood. In fact, with the resurgence of appeal towards fashion and style from the late 1930s, as well as the 1940s, it was only natural snoods would some how appear back in fashion.

These days you can purchase them in a wide variety of colours and styles. If you are crafty and have talents for knitting or crochet, it's easy enough to find a pattern and to make your own. Otherwise just scour the net for sources of where to buy. Etsy is naturally the first place I look. Arthelia's Attic sells gorgeous ones in a few varied styles:

Their popularity is just growing so you may find it a tad difficult to find the exact style you want. After being laid-off from her job, Marisa refused to sacrifice style! Instead of going out and blowing the money she didn't have, she took a shoestring budget and got super creative. All it took was $365 to reinvent 365 dresses. You heard that right; that's a dollar a day. Now you'd think that the clothing you'd find for mere a dollar could (in a lot of cases) be hideous; where many saw hopeless/ugly clothing, Marisa saw potential for chic reinvention. The results have been nothing short of inspiring!

I don't know about you, but this gets me even more jazzed to hit the thrift shops and search for hidden treasures!! In fact, yesterday on my lunch I picked up two gems. Ok, so they cost a little more than $1 each, but they were still quite a bargoon for what they were. Stay tuned for befores and afters as I intend to pay homage to New Dress a Day with my own little transformations. Although truth be told, it wouldn't be my first time. Last year I took a dress that was a positively hideous polyester moo-moo and turned it into one of my favourite dresses. Sadly, I didn't take the time to take before pictures, but here's my after creation.

Now when you look at it, picture it tent size and falling all the way to the floor with awkward long sleeves. It's amazing what you can do with a little time, effort and a bit of know-how.

I've chatted about it A LOT, it's true, but yet again I'm going to gush about Etsy. In these past few years I have grown so accostomed to exploring and shopping through the site, that it's become a second-nature of sorts. It's even at the point where I'm pretty sure I give a blank stare to anyone who tells me that haven't heard about it. "What? You haven't? Alright, here's the lowdown!" and through telling each new person, I see addiction brewing in their eyes. Are you addicted? Don't even tell me you're not, because I know you are just in denial ;)

Shopping for little ones is new to me and has proven to be a whole new ballgame in the world of Etsy-ing. It is HUGE. Not only for parents/families/friends, but also for photographers (prop purchases etc.). In my brief foray into Etsy mommy shopping (as I will now refer to it as), I've come across a handful of fantastic little Canadian shops.

In autumn of last year I experienced a first: I became an aunt! Needless to say that I was overjoyed with my beautiful new niece and when Christmas approached, I knew I wanted to get her a gift that was personalized and sweet. Enter lovely friend and crochet-master-extraordinaire Rebecca of the adorable Little Threads shop.

I had been browsing the site for weeks and finally dawned on me that the perfect purchase for little Mackenna (cutest niece ever, although I may just be biased? ;) was one of her beautiful crocheted hats. Yet had the option of personalizing it with different colours. My choices? Main colour a toasty chocolate brown, while the bow and trim were in a punchy pink to match Mackenna's nursery scheme. In fact, during her newborn photo-session, she wore an almost identical hats for one of the photos. I had no idea until Christmas day when I got to see the pictures; what a cool coincidence. This hat and Mackenna were just meant to be.

Lately my life has been a series of baby booms. It is everywhere. In the air, in the water, in the media. Babies, babies, babies. Well you know what? It's time I celebrate them! This is to the members of my family, my close friends who are beginning new lives or expanding on their current ones. I get to be a aunty 3 times over within these last few months (and the months to come). Naturally, this is such a joyous gift and my happiness is compounded with the fabulous news that just keeps coming and coming.

Today will be a dedication to them all (and to all you lovely readers out there expecting, who are new mothers/fathers, expanding mothers/fathers, aunts/uncles, grandmas/grandpas, and proud friends). I'm about to give you a whole whack of sources for mommys and babies. Sources for inspiration, creativity and purpose. A few months ago, I had the immense pleasure of working with a hot up and coming photographer. Michelle Collis met me on a warm late summer day to help me be the pin-up girl I've always dreamed of becoming. The results were nothing short of a raging success. Not only did I have a blast, keeled over in laughs half the time with Michelle, I also got to see how a real photographer works. I felt at ease being her subject and thought, "wow, this woman is going places".

I'm talking about the Okanagan in majestic British Columbia. Well specifically a little town known as Vernon.

We are now met with another extraordinarily talented photographer, and also a good friend of mine. I have chatted about her a little bit before (she designed my header); she is the lovely and so adorable Camillia Courts of Camillia Courts Photography. We met about a year ago through the wondrous source of a fun online woman's forum. We have just clicked and become good friends (despite never having actually met before in person).

Camillia is a photog. She shoots it all! Weddings, engagements, boudoirs, family portraits, maternity, newborn, children, celebrities. Have you heard of the wildly talented recording artist Andrew Allen? You can bet my girl shot the cover for his album.

Oh and guess who just scored a magazine cover? Yup, Camillia sure did.

Her favourite subjects though are clearly her beautiful children Aidan and Layla. I'm sure they've become quite accustomed to seeing mommy carrying around her camera everywhere.

Retro Hair - The Essentials - Belle Blossoms

For the third installment of my mini Retro Hair Essentials series, we are alas at the best part, the finishing touches! Hopefully by now you may have checked out Lauren Rennell's Vintage Hairstyling as featured in my second Retro Hair Essentials installment. At the end of the book she goes over the various accessories to use to add that little bit extra to complete a vintage hair style. Everything under the sun including scarves, snoods, ribbon, bows, bands, combs and of course, flowers.

While there are several vendors and crafts people in shops, on Etsy and online in general, I have fallen in love with one amazing shop- Belle Blossoms. Shopkeeper/designer Heather was enouraged to open up shop and go into the industry of making vintage-inspired hair accessories by her long-time friend Ashley aka Lisa Freemont Street.

Remember a few weeks back when this all began I kicked off my series with the truly lovely Lisa Freemont Street? Of course you do, afterall, she is kind of addicting once you start following her YouTube page and adding her fan site to Facebook Pages.

Lisa Freemont Street not only provided me with an introduction to Vintage Hairstyling, she also hooked me to the Belle Blossoms shop. After watching a few product reviews of the lovely flowers for sale on the site, I knew it was a purchase I wanted to make. But the question was, where to start? You'll see below all the options/styles/colours there are to choose from.

Have you ever been a member of an "of the month club"? Guess what! Belle Blossoms offers this and it is my very first time being part of such a club! Each month around the same time I get the new featured hair flower clip. How lovely.

Raven Rose

There are quite a few variables to consider when joining the club. Mainly, what size flower do you want to receive each month? and how would you like to pay? (monthly, or in one shot).

Red Poinsettia

I chose the medium flower. So far I'm two months in, with 2 beautiful flowers that have already been worn quite a lot. My poinsettia was the perfect accessory to my Christmas and Holidays celebrations. Best part were the compliments I received.

Autumn Peonies

Quality of craftmanship is truly evident when you receive your Belle Blossom. Delicate care and consideration goes into making each piece. Honestly, they look like the most "real" fake hair flower I've ever seen.

Clips are attached to the flower in such a way to make they comfortable to wear. No pulling, catching hair; the clip goes on and off smoothly to keep your hairstyle perfectly intact. After spending (sometimes) hours perfecting a look, this is key.

Gypsy Rose

While the shop specializes in flowers, you can also find a variety of other hair accessories. Bow clips, feathers (one with a flower shown above), side clips/combs and cherries made with ribbon. Everything to feed your vintage/retro hairstyling addiction.

Green Delphinium Blossom Side Combs

I'm all giddy and excited knowing my next blossom for January is in the mail. Each month with your blossom you get a lovely poem card with a clue to the next month's flower. I can't even remember the clue, but it stumped me. Somehow I have a feeling it's going to be some kind of white flower. I'll let you know if I'm right.

Twitter has proven to be such a fabulous source of building up a list of contacts/sources of the vintage enthusiast crowd. I always knew that this crowd was a big , but had no idea how big until I embraced Twitter last year. It never fails that every time I see a new update regarding a fabulous vintage frock for sale, or reference to anything vintage that it instantly makes me a bit happier. One Twitter friend who always can do this is the beautiful (Grace Kelly look-a-like) Ms. Lottie of Lottie Loves.

Her story is truly an inspiring one of embracing life; the here and now by truly making the most of every moment. Years ago she was a brave woman using another blog as an outlet for her to discuss the disease she was battling at the time. Unfortunately for those 3 years she wasn't able to live the way she usually would.

Now that she is (thankfully) feeling much better, she is taking her passions; caring for her beautiful family (she is a self-proclaimed and I'm sure proven domestic diva), pursuing all her creative interests (sewing, knitting, baking, gardening etc.), and her big LOVE for retro/vintage culture (40s/50s mainly) and letting it all shine in her fabulous blog.

Most exciting is how she is currently adjusting to a big move, hopping all the way across an ocean and a continent...moving from the UK to the sunny climates of Northern California. As this is something I have always dreams of doing (taking a big and life changing move), I have loved reading about her transition.

Without doubt, my favourite weekly feature is her "Think Frock It's Friday" installments. The idea is a simple one: promote the idea of wearing a dress (or frock) each Friday or during the weekend. A call to all women to get dolled up and feel feminine in a beautiful frock. Best of all is she gives plenty of examples and sources for you to check out to purchase a new one! You'll never be stumped come Friday with her helpful tips.

Pin-up art/culture, burlesque, domestic endeavours, classic Hollywood and style icons are just a few more areas she adores exploring each day. In short, Lottie Loves has become (in a quick time) a favourite daily read of mine. We seem to have such similar tastes in style so most of all, I look forward to those cheeky posts showing her personal style (like 90% of the images listed above). Gatsby

The announcement was made months ago, but I simply cannot get over this image. It is of Carey Mulligan in her new role as Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Being one of my all time favourite novels, naturally I was quite concerned with their choice of leads. When they chose Carey, I breathed a sigh of relief. To me, this image, and her wonderous talent fits the role so perfectly.

Sewing Nook Inspiration

My bachelorette apartment is pretty tiny. So tiny that whenever I take on a new sewing project, it seems to take over my entire living space. The major problem with this is that I don't exactly have a designated space dedicated solely to sewing and art projects. A big reorganization needs to take place soon. New Gloss

How do you know you need new lip gloss? When you are out with your 10 year old step-sister who notices you putting on lip gloss and responds by putting on her own. Here's the kicker...my gloss was some crappy little Bonne Bell "Dr. Pepper" flavour, and hers...a brand new MAC lipgloss. She's 10! Quick, someone pass me a grown up gloss, STAT!

Water for Elephants

I'm a little late getting on the bandwagon, but today I just started reading Sara Gruen's Water for Elephants. So far, so good. Seeing the trailer for the upcoming film adaptation was my push to read it. Plus it helps that I was enouraged to read it after a glowing recommendation from GF Camillia (aka the lovely photog who designed my fab header).

I have a sneaking suspicion, judging by the trailer, that I will be soon lusting over every outfit Reese Witherspoon's character wore in this film. I already spot a dozen. The 1930s is rapidly becoming my new favourite style decade.
